video gear deep dive

WINTER 2025

This is a series of one-off 3hr intensive workshops where Andrei Jay will go into detail on tips, tricks, theories, and techniques around using specific peices of video gear. These sessions will primarily be focused around lecture & examples, students will be required to keep their cameras & mics off and only use the chat room for questions/discussion. Recorded videos of each session will be available for participants to view for 2 weeks after the class session.

SEASON 1 Winter 2025

Videonics Mx1 Weds feb 12 9-12pm EST: The most affordable, compact, and polarizing video mixer in the analog composite video world. Folks love it for the sheer scale of it’s capabilities and dislove it for its quirky and awkward digital interface. We will go over some basic tips for getting the most out this little beast, advanced techniques using unique features of its pool of geometry warping wipes, and maybe even dive deeper into the operating system menus than anyone in recorded history.

VSERPI Waaave Pool Sat feb 22 1-4pm EST: I guess I probably know a couple things about this little feedback synth. I’ll do an exaustive run down of all the controls and various extra modes (videoreactive controls, feedforward delay, motion looper) and then build off of that to focus on several of my go-to settings.

Roland V-02hd Weds march 5 9-12pm EST: Lets enter the modern world and take a look at the tiniest little hd video mixer from rolands current line up. Looks like we are entering a new world where we’ve got a fair amount of inexpensive (and compact!) video gear out there aimed at the livestreaming market, similar to how the public access and home video production market of the 90s drove production of much of the analog gear video artists take for granted today! We will find out what kind of stuff roland kept from the old school edirol series, what got lost in the hd transitions, and what kind of new tricks can we get up to!

Panasonic Mx-70 Sat March 15 1-4pm EDT: Closing off the winter season with a bang, the mx-70 is probably tied with the mx-1 as my most requested mixer guide. Panasonic jumps whole heartedly into the the world of menus, but not without a decent interface and amount of soft buttons to get you around. Oversampled internal feedback! Individual channel proc amps! A button for heart wipes! That weird x-y independent pixelation mode! Maybe I’ll even reliably figure out how to use the DSK on this thing this time around! (note, we will only be looking at the vanilla mx-70 without sdi or the 3d board).

Please note: if less than 10 folks are signed up for any of these sessions 48 hrs before they are scheduled, there is a very good chance that the session will be postponed or cancelled, depending on some combination of numbers and vibes. I’m not doing any howling into the void here up in 2025.

If there is other video gear you’d like to request (or just a re-run of one of these) and/or the timing of these is really inconvenient for you, fill out this form to let me know! If I get a lot of information from yalls there I’ll change things up! If folks only try to communicate with me via comments on instagram then I’ll just keep doing whatever the heck I want.
